Solar Biennale 1

Back to The Solar Biennale

The first edition of The Solar Biennale took place in the Netherlands in 2022, in collaboration with Nieuwe Instituut and Dutch Design Week.

This inaugural event sparked global dialogue around solar design and its role in shaping a sustainable future. Spanning Rotterdam and Eindhoven there was a rich program featuring exhibitions and installations that showcased innovative solar-powered designs, art, and architecture. Workshops and talks brought together experts and creatives to explore the intersection of solar energy, culture, and technology. Additionally, The Solar Movement Manifesto invited individuals and organizations to embrace a solar-powered future that goes beyond efficiency and economics, highlighting solar energy as a driver of creativity and societal transformation.

  • Overall program

The Solar Biennale looked at the grand theme of solar energy through five lenses, each of which maneuvers beyond efficiency in its own way: personal, social, spatial, environmental and digital. The proposals and the programmes in collaboration with various locations, organisations and designers such as [Museum]ParX, Studio Roosegaarde, BlueCity, Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, IABR, Next Nature Network and Dutch Design Week offered a critical but accessible look into that changing process.
